How You Can Help?

Be careful and conscious of sea otters by making sure not to run them over if they cross your path. Help protect our beloved animal

Visit and Donate to Rehabilitation centers that rescue injured otters from the sea.

Helping build back up the sea otter population does not only benefit the kelp forest ecosystem, it is also economically beneficial. I am not the only person who finds sea otters adorable, so does the ecotourism community. There is a reason that the Sea Otter and Kelp Forest exhibits at Monterey Bay Aquarium are two of the most visited exhibits annually. A recent study done on recovery cost and benefits by a marine biologist, Edward Gregar, predicted that just from ecotourism for sea otters alone, profit has an increase by $42 million per year. In addition to the ecotourism financial boom, Hamdi Issawi wrote in his article Sea otters are back with a worrying vengeance in B.C. “Recovering kelp forests… are projected to offset the loss with benefits such as carbon sequestration, estimated at $2.2 million annually. The seaweeds also invite more diverse marine life, including commercial fin fish, worth nearly $10 billion per year. These include everything from lingcod and rockfish to kelp crabs and smaller invertebrates that feed other parts of the ecosystem.”
